Radius Arm Rebuild

pathfinder4x4vans@gmail.com

It is quite common for the rear stud of the radius arm to be rusted beyond repair. New radius arms are not available at this time, so you will need to repair yours. When the channel of the radius arm was formed, the opposite sides of the channel were rolled closer together, and formed a circular area for the stud to be installed. A gap was left to be filled with weld. A hole was also punched on the outside face of the radius arm so weld could be applied from the opposite side. In order to free the old stud, you will need to grind out the old welds. Then press out the old stud and press in the new one. The damaged you caused  grinding out the old stud will provide plenty of area for welding in the new stud.

Apply heat to the nut on the rear radius arm stud. This will help the nut to expand on it’s threads and break loose from the stud.

PICT0028

This is typical of most radius arm corrosion damage. It’s to far to thin to reuse and the threads semi stripped when the nut was removed.

You can spray a little WD40 if you want, it will smoke because of the pre heat, but help the nut come off without damaging the threads

The bushing that appeared to be good before disassembly definitely has separation anxiety issues.

Here is the other problem you can look forward to. It is common for the spring seat mounting bolts to snap off. Take great care in removing them.

Radius 31

Check the backside of the radius arm drop bracket and make sure the sleeve is still square and not worn at an angle.

Remove the old bushings and inspect the holes in the radius arm yoke for damage.

Radius 33

Check the other side as well.  It is common for the stud to wear down into the bracket and wallow out the sleeve.
