K-van leaf spring installation

The Pathfinder replacement springs are designed to be installed without fabrication or modification. The bushings pressed into the springs are the same as the stock leaf spring bushing. The spring are also designed to have a smoother ride. You may want to consider replacing your shocks.

Support the front end of the van on some stout jack stands, slightly elevated. Place a floor jack under the axle to support the axle while undoing the axle u-bolts. Lower the axle so the leaf spring is free of the axle housing. Remove the 9/16 x 4 bolts from the front spring hanger and the shackles. Remove the old spring. The kit also includes replacement bushings for the upper shackle mount. The old bushings can be very difficult to remove. Many van owners heat the bushing up with a propane or acetylene torch. This melts the rubber and loosens the inner sleeve. Be careful, melted burning rubber sticks to naked skin with a vengeance and is incredibly painful. Wear safety equipment.

When you are able to handle the shackle mount, use a small chisel to split the old bushings outer sleeve. Be careful not to gouge the shackle mount, any raised metal will interfere with the installation of the new bushing. Once the old bushing sleeve is compromised, drive it out.

Slip the new spring in position and reinstall the hanger, shackle bolts and new u-bolts.

You may be surprised to see that the van has lifted higher than you thought it would. The stock replacement springs #PF0051NS are approx. 1 inch higher than the stock Pathfinder springs. The springs specifications are based on the stock factory specifications. If your spring has sagged 2 or 3 inches, your van may be lifted upwards of 4 inches with a stock replacement springs.
