Part-time or Full-time?

Pathfinder built their Dodge and Plymouth Vanchargers as Full-time 4wd up to 1984, and Part-time 1985 and up. There have been vans that have gone either way for a year or two of this series split, so double check. Here are a few pictures to help you identify what you have.

Full-time

Vancharger Full time Rotor

This is the backside of a new stock full-time hub and rotor assembly. The wheel bearings press onto the spindle protruding from the back side of hub. Nothing protrudes past the wheel face of the hub, just a big castle nut with a cotter pin.

But your 79 Vancharger has locking hubs you say? This is an after market locking hub kit installed onto a full-time hub and rotor. Warn and MileMarker made kits in the past. Notice that the hub goes over the wheel studs and is not housed in an internally splined wheel hub. When the hub is removed, you will see a aftermarket shaft protruding from the hub center with several holes on the end.

Part-time wheel hubs of the 1985 and up models look like the  hub pictured on the left. It could be any type or brand, the important thing is the hub inserts into a splined wheel hub.

This wheel hub caught us by surprise earlier this year. It’s not a common setup. The “big hub” externally mounted style hub was common on the 1973-76 Ford and GM vans, but not on the Chryslers. It may be the result of a conversion, similar the the conversion explained in the 4x4 van tech pages. It is part-time and works, and that’s all that matters.
